Do you ever wish you could go back in time? Do you look back on all those mistakes you’ve made and wonder, what if? If only I had left five minutes later. If only I had spoken up. Unfortunately that’s not how life works, but if in some kind of alternate universe it did work that way, there is a fictional interpretation of this kind of world. Allow me to introduce you to one of my favorite shows: “Being Erica”.

After four dramatic seasons it is unfortunately no longer on the air, but that doesn’t make it any less worth while. This Canadian series is filmed in Toronto, promoting its many landmarks, musicians and lifestyles. It is based around the life of Erica Strange, a thirty-two year old Jewish woman who ends up crossing paths with therapist Dr. Tom Wexlar. What Erica doesn’t know when she is first approached by Dr. Tom is that he has the ability to send her back in time and fix her handful of life regrets. Throughout all four seasons, Erica time travels between her present life and past regrets, changing her mistakes and learning valuable lessons while doing so. There are many TV shows that I believe have gone downhill after their first seasons, but Being Erica is not one of them. If anything, it took me a while to get into, but after the first few episodes the show developed into an exciting journey of light drama with a pinch of science fiction.

Perhaps I am biased towards this show seeing as I am a twenty year old female also living in Toronto, but regardless of my age and location I think that most women would agree with me if they gave the show a chance. Available on iTunes and various TV streaming websites, it is not hard to find. If you have Netflix then you have no excuse-it’s already sitting their preloaded, calling your name! Not only am I strongly recommending this patriotic series, I am also looking for your second, third and fourth opinions. On Friday nights most college students you come across will be studying, partying, or grabbing some sort of fast food meal. However, once in a while you will come across those odd specimens, such as myself, who prefer to put Friday night’s free time towards Disney movie marathons. Movie after movie I think to myself “Why can’t there be a place like Snow White’s cottage? A tiny little town full of charming, tiny houses that will make you feel as though you are a character in a fairytale.” Before you begin to nod your heads in agreement and shed a few tears, let me tell you this-there is. I’m not talking about Disneyland folks, this is the real thing. Allow me to introduce you to the town of Colmar, France.

With a population of 65, 000 and German-inspired architecture, it would be hard to believe you aren’t in a theme park. Although I have yet to visit this little village, I have no doubt that it lives up to its reputation. Whenever I think of running off to Europe and spending my days roaming around its small towns, this is exactly what springs to my mind. Full of plenty of history (it was the last French town to be freed in World War II), Alsatian cuisine and multiple craft vendors, you don’t want to overlook this town when planning a trip to France. Although it is fairly large for a medieval town, by what I’ve heard you can still easily get around by foot. With its canals, boats, bridges and fountains, this town has definitely earned it’s nickname “La Petite Venise” (little Venice).

When it comes to tasting, feeling, and spending time in Colmar, I would much rather deliver those details to you readers once I’ve actually experienced it for myself. I can only hope that one day I will be fortunate to spend time in this magical village-sing my happy working songs, discover tales old as time, and even if just for a few days, become part of it’s world.

Hungry for a Movie?

It’s all I can think about. It’s all I can talk about. Those unfortunate people who are constants in my life probably want to tape my mouth shut at this point, but I can’t help it-I’m addicted. This is more than a craving, it’s an obsession. What is it that takes over my mind, you may ask?

Obviously I’m talking about “The Hunger Games”.

After exiting the theatre on Saturday afternoon, I found my mind spinning with excitement. Movies of this sort have the ability to be quite enjoyable, such as Harry Potter, or end up disasters (Twilight, anyone?) Based on those popular blockbusters, I went in with an open mind and hopes that I wouldn’t leave the theatre begging for two hours of my life back. That night, not only did I want to see it again, but I immediately began reading the series. I couldn’t go another day without knowing the fate of Katniss and Peeta (no spoilers please, I’m only on the second book!) Although I was personally enthralled by the romantic aspect of the movie, it really was the strong female lead that played a big part in making this film a hit. Seeing as Bella Swan is by no means a proper role model for teenage girls, the movie industry has clearly been lacking an adolescent female lead with any substance. Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence was cast perfectly in the role of Katniss. It could be because I read the book after the movie, but I personally enjoyed her character in the movie more than I did in the novel. Jennifer has the ability to portray a strong willed, yet extremely likable character without being the least bit annoying, conceited or unintelligent. In addition to her well developed character, the plot in general is captivating all the way through. I can’t count the number of times that I was gripping the sides of my chair, dying to know the fate of the tributes. When you have all of those components (plus the adorable Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth) failure is basically impossible.

The one main thing that bothered me about the film was an article I read revealing the cast’s salaries. Jennifer Lawrence was given a salary of $500,000 (plus bonuses depending on the success of the film) which is by no means acceptable for a movie with this much hype and popularity. All the cast members have signed contracts for the series, so I can only hope that their salaries will be much better come the second and third films.

If you’re looking for a study break, something to fill a lonely night, or a movie you won’t be disappointed with, go see “The Hunger Games”. Although my taste in certain films does tend to differ from the rest of my friends, I would most definitely recommend this movie to everyone I know. It’s exciting, inspiring, entertaining and leaves you wanting even more. The only bad news here is that unfortunately more could take another year or two. Normally I am embarrassed when I give in to a pop culture phenomenon of this sort, but I will openly and proudly say that I am now, and will be for a while, a true Hunger Games fan. Happy Hunger Games-and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Oh, and in case you didn’t already guess, I’m Team Peeta.
